The study also finds that alcohol consumption reduces the risk of developing the disease, confirming the results of previous studies. The study which is published online in the journal Rheumatology , looked at 873 patients with rheumatoid arthritis and compared them with 1004 people without RA (the control group). The researchers, led by Gerry Wilson, Professor of Rheumatology at the University of Sheffield (Sheffield, UK), asked the two groups how frequently they had drunk alcohol in the month preceding their inclusion in the study. We do know that the changes in the immune system that lead to RA happen months and maybe even years before the arthritis actually develops,” said Dr Maxwell. These include the fact that they only recorded the frequency rather than the amount of alcohol consumption in the month before people joined the study; there might be bias due to people recalling inaccurately how often they drank alcohol and also the information represents a snapshot of drinking behaviour at one point in time, rather than giving information about fluctuating alcohol consumption over a longer period; and, finally, there were marked differences in age and gender between the RA and the control groups, although the researchers did adjust their results for these factors.

WHO Updates Recommendations To Reduce Mother-To-Child HIV Infection
The World Health Organization issued updated guidelines for improving efforts to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV by testing women earlier in their pregnancies and testing and treating infants sooner after their births, the Wall Street Journal reports. The issue has been controversial, but the very low risk of transmission from breastfeeding is more than offset by the life-saving nutritional benefits of the practice if either the mother or infant are receiving treatment, according to Gottfried Hirnschall, director of HIV/AIDS at WHO. Medicare Announces Demonstration Testing Decision Support Systems For Advanced Medical Imaging Services
The MID was authorized by section 135(b) of the Medicare Improvements for Patients and Providers Act of 2008 and will test whether the use of decision support systems (DSSs) can improve quality of care and reduce unnecessary radiation exposure and utilization by promoting appropriate ordering of advanced imaging services. The two-year demonstration will assess the impact that DSSs used by physician practices have on the appropriateness and utilization of advanced medical imaging services ordered for the Medicare fee-for-service population. Conveners will be responsible for recruiting physician practices, deploying a DSS that incorporates medical specialty society guidelines for the selected procedures, ensuring the DSS remains current with those guidelines, collecting and transmitting data, and distributing payments to practices for reporting data. CMS will consider the characteristics of the physician practices and the ability of the convener to perform the functions identified in the solicitation when selecting demonstration areas.
